Circa 1690 Century Dome Top Italian Coffer
The chest has an unusual angled design to the lid which has its original clasp to the locking plate.
The large cast handles to the sides are a great design with Baccanalian masks projecting the cast drops and the chest has the remnants of its original Paduan (Italian) pretty rose coloured velvet upholstery and studded decoration.
The Greek God of wine Bacchus stepped in for Dionysus who rewarded him with the title of ‘Party God’. Bacchus was associated with fertility and destroyer of morality; to this day, a drunken orgy is still called a bacchanalia.
